The
Physical Education program at Myers is well rounded and focuses on the
Salem-Keizer P.E. expectations
The Rhythms Program at Myers is a 35 minute class that meets once a
week. Rhythms is part of the Physical Education Curriculum. Brain gym is
included in the program as well. It is a series of simple movements used
in Educational Kinesiology to enhance the experience of brain learning.
Rhythms allows our students to develop social skills, learn about other
cultures, unifies our school and connects us both mentally and physically.
Mrs.
Herbert, a graduate of Western Oregon
University, has been P.E. Specialist at Myers school since 1989. She was
nominated the Darrell L. Crossler Educator of the Year in 1989. Mrs.
Herbert loves teaching her students grades 1-5 Physical Education and
Rhythms. She believes that it is important for children at an early age to
learn the benefits of movement, self-management and fitness
This is
Mr. Hanson's
second year at
Myers Elementary School though he has worked in the Salem-Keizer School
District for three years as a substitute teacher. He has taught
Physical Education for more than fifteen years—the past ten years have
been at the elementary school level. Mr. Hanson has coached football,
wrestling, track and field, as well as cross country, and has completed
five marathons and numerous triathlons. He enjoys being physically
active and hopes his students will too.

your score was 20. When you check the chart at school in the gym, you see
for your gender and age you need to complete 23 laps to be in the healthy
zone for you. Your goal can be; I will try to make 23 laps for the

DDR Dance
Dance Revolution is the latest and most popular interactive video game on
the market today. This is a great tool in our quest to promote lifetime
physical activity. DDR is a game that combines quick reflexes and timing
with dance music.
Record breaking in P. E. We have about 20 records
set by Myers students. Last year a boy set a Myers Elementary hula-hoop
record of three hours!
Indoor Bowling Program
Town
and Country Bowling Fun Center sponsors this program.
They bring the lanes, pins, and bowling balls to our school. After P.E.
teachers teach bowling skills, all of our 4th and 5th grade students take
a bowling field trip to Town and Country to try out their skills.

Myers Awesome Fun
Run Participants

Saturday, May 3rd, was a great day with more than 70 Myers
students running in the 26th annual Awesome Fun Run sponsored by the
Salem-Keizer Education Foundation! As one can see there were smiling faces
everywhere. Mrs. H-D (bottom right with lei) is getting her T-shirt
autographed by Myers ex-Myers student, Melissa T, that designed the
T-shirt for this year's event.

Elks
National Hoop Shoot Contest These events are
sponsored by the Elks Club of Keizer, OR. For the second year in a row,
Seth Erickson competed in the National Hoop Shoot Contest in
Springfield Mass. Seth won the regional boys division. We were proud to
have Seth represent Myers school at Nationals.
Shape
Up Across Oregon This is a great opportunity for students and teachers to enjoy
increased energy and better health through fun activities and sensible
nutrition. Students that complete the journey across Oregon receive a
certificate of completion signed by the Oregon's Governor. There are
student prize winners, too. The program runs for the entire month of
April.
1st
and 2nd Grade Rhythms Program: Activities are divided into
the following categories:
During the first half of the year, the following concepts
are stressed:
- Movement/Response to Steady Beat
- Spatial Response to Auditory Directions
- Basic Large Motor Skills, such as walk, skip, gallop, slide, march,
and tiptoe.
- Isolating Left and Right Sides
- Appropriate Expressive Physical Response to Differing Musical Styles
- Simple Formal Dances will be added during the second half of the
year, as are developmentally-appropriate.
- Steady Beat Patterns using body percussion while seated (clap, pat
shoulders, knees, floor, and so forth) to a variety of styles of
music. This is teacher-directed at first and we may later use student
leaders as they become more comfortable with the process.
3rd-5th Grade: We teach one
dance a week, and review and assess the following week. More difficult
dances may require more than one week of instruction, before assessment is
appropriate. Conversely, not all dances/activities are formally assessed.
Note: some dances appear at other grade levels. Adjustments are made to
address the developmental stage of the students at a given grade level.
1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 4th Grade students are
expected to perform specific skills to meet the Salem-Keizer requirements.
All students in grades 1-5 are given two
grades, Self-Management and Skill Development on their student school
report card.
